Frighteningly Good: Bloober Team's Layers of Fear Gets a Name Change

Just when you thought Bloober Team couldn't get any more creative, the renowned developer surprises us again with announcing a name change to its horror franchise Layers of Fear. With the first installment gaining notoriety for its intense atmosphere and a much anticipated sequel released in 2019, the prospect of a third entry is highly anticipated. While fans are excited for what is to come, the game's slight name change has many confused as to its meaning. 

When Layers of Fears first arrived on the scene in 2016, it quickly gained notoriety for its visually pleasing set pieces and dark narrative. With no enemy threat, the game relied on its psychological horror elements to instill fear in the player, and it was successful in doing so. Critics gave the game varied reviews, with some praising its horror elements while others criticizing it for its short length. This left many eagerly awaiting a sequel, and in 2019 it arrived. 

The sequel, while not as well received, still contained the same twisted visuals and left fans wanting more. This led to anticipation for the third installment, and at Gamescom 2022, Bloober Team finally made their announcement. With the studio also busy preparing for their remake of Silent Hill 2, fans were delighted that they were yet again offering a glimpse into the next entry of the horror series. 

The teaser trailer for the game revealed a few details, but one particular thing that raised some questions was the name change from Layers of Fears to Layers of Fear. When asked about it on Twitter, Bloober Team stated it made the change based on feedback from fans. While this may suggest the game will be a remake of the first entry, this is not the case. Rather, the game will be a third installment, with the series becoming a threequel. 

Despite some mixed reviews on Bloober Team's previous work, it is obvious they have the ability to stand out in the indie horror genre with their visually stunning releases. This time, they are striving to tie the series together and cement their place in AAA horror gaming with the Silent Hill remake. While there is still some time until the release of Layers of Fear in 2023, the teaser trailer has already created immense anticipation for what is to come. 

For horror fans, the prospect of Bloober Team's latest installment of Layers of Fear is sure to excite. With the change of name and the slight mystery surrounding the game, interest in the third installment has never been higher. It is obvious the studio is hard at work on creating something truly special, and when the game does eventually release in 2023, it will undoubtedly be a horror experience unlike any other.
