Valve Set to Revolutionize Gaming with Steam Controller 2 and New VR Innovations

Valve is reportedly developing a successor to its original Steam Controller, as revealed by insider sources.

According to a source, the Steam Controller 2, codenamed Ibex, is currently in production and nearing mass production stages. This controller is distinct from the VR controller codenamed Roy, which is also in development for a similar production goal.

While specific details remain scarce, it's expected that the new Steam Controller will resemble a classic gamepad with notable adjustments to the shape and dimensions of the trackpads. This redesign aims to transition it into a more traditional gamepad form, complemented by symmetrical analog sticks.

Furthermore, it's been reported that Valve is creating a new VR controller known as Roy, which has been alluded to in SteamVR code. This device is anticipated to function as a wand-like accessory for the upcoming wireless headset, Deckard. Roy is said to have the versatility to operate as a standard gamepad when not engaged in VR activities, featuring a D-pad, shoulder buttons, and ABXY buttons for conventional gameplay, alongside its motion capabilities.

  • D-Pad
  • Bumpers
  • Grip Buttons
  • Triggers
  • ABXY Buttons
  • System Button
  • Strap of some sort

Confidence in these developments stems from data mining activities and unnamed insider sources. An unreleased OpenXR extension for these controllers has also been uncovered.

Although the release dates for either device are still uncertain, there are indications that Deckard is unlikely to launch during the holiday season of 2024. This headset has reportedly been under development for quite some time, first making headlines back in 2021. The headset is expected to differ significantly from Valve's previous Index model, which required multiple base station sensors and a PC connection. Allegedly, Deckard will operate as a standalone device, similar to a Meta Quest headset, making it a potentially more accessible and affordable option for users.

Regarding the Steam Controller 2, fans remain optimistic that it will feature a control scheme and customization options reminiscent of the Steam Deck handheld, which saw the release of an upgraded OLED model last year. An inquiry has been made to Valve for further details.
